According to geologist Ben Mason at the Department of Earth Sciences at Cambridge University, volcanic eruptions occur 18 percent more often when there's winter in the norhtern hemisphere. The reason for this is that every winter 9 billion tons of water (in the form of rain or snow) falls down on land. The pressure from all this water squeezes the earth's surface so that the north pole is pressed down by three milimeters and the equator is expanded accordingly. During this deformation, magma finds its ways through the cracks, setting off the eruptions.
